Precis-Article 3

Vlasopolos, Anca. Victimization in "A Streetcar Named Desire." Theatre Journal. 38(1986): 322-338.

Vlasopolos argues that A Streetcar Named Desire was a play directed to have ethical and generic aspects that may have lead to a classical tragedy. She criticized Williams' lack of specifying a tone that he wanted to set for the play. A modern tragedy is what Vlasopolos described A Streetcar Named Desire. This article summarized the movie as a whole and explained the character's points in the way they did things. Males were the dominant figures in the household and if that was taken away form them, they were real quick to gain it back. Blanche was given that name to describe how pale and confused she was. Stanley is described as a male who likes for things to go by his way or the highway. A sociopoilitical crisis(Vlasopolos) was said to be in the air with Blanche getting caught up and put out, Mitch leaving Blanche, Stella upset with Stanley and taking the baby with her to their neighbor's apartment and Stanley calling up the stairs " Hey Stella" again. To show how the men were more important, Stanley's mistakes were not looked down on like Blache's mistakes were.

Broude, Norma. "Modern Woman or the Cult of True Womanhood?" Woman's Art Journal. 2
(2000-2001): 36-43.

Mary Cassatt is a woman who is independent and makes things her own way through her art. When she went to France, the woman were seen as passive who were only mothers and housewives. Cassatt is the opposite of how the French cult of true womanhood is supposed to be. She preferred to be single to keep her happiness and did just fine without a man on her side. Cassatt wanted to give woman a public voice through her paintings and show in them that woman should be respected. Mothers and children were painted in pictures that made you think about the meaning. The paintings of the mothers and children were in public places such as on the train, in the park, etc.. were to show how modern woman are supposed to interact in their child's lives and be able to let the world see their independence.

In the 18th century, being pregnant was not something that was as normal as it is today. Woman would be depressed while pregnant because they could not do the house work that needed to be done without feeling very tired. To change that mind set, Cassatt began to paint woman who were happy and fulfilled mothers who showed the joys motherhood. Later on the woman who were married without children because of these paintings became divorced and unhappy. Cassatt made art that showed respect for woman and how they could be beautiful naked. It is said in a piece of the article that Cassatt had a lead on the women's suffrage when she mand the painting, "

Precis-Article 1

Leff, Leonard J. And Transfer to Cemetery: "The Streetcars Named Desire." Film Quarterly. 55(2002): 29-37.

Many people believe that a movie should be great the first time around and the second time not get all the credit. A Streetcar Named Desire had two releases: one in 1951 and one in 1993. The thesis was written throughout the article as the 1993 version being better because of censorship. The Legion of Decency states that the 1951s censorship took away from some of the most important things in the movie. Censorship disabled the viewers to get a full idea of the characters' personality and the relationships between the couples in the movie.

The Daily News found Blanche "a generous, loving accomodator of any yearning stranger who has been driven out". Others(like Variety) found Blanche to be a nymphomaniac who had been married to a degenerate who committed suicide."(Jeff,p.31) Due to the different versions of the movie, people's opinions of the main characters became different. One person thought that Blanche was a sweet loving woman who feigned for young boys and another found Blanche to be a psycho who has a dead husband who killed himself and those were her reasons of the way she acted.

Hughes and McKay's Questions

1. These rivers are located in East Africa, Africa, Turkey and the United States. Hughes probably visited these places and loved the site. The history of these rivers might have fascinated him to the point where he had to write about them in his poems. All the rivers Hughes mentiones in the poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" is all of them are a part of the longest and strongest rivers in the world.
2. "I am the darker brother" means that in the entire, he is the black one they draw most of their attention to. He eats in the kitchen because he is the negro that is supposed to show respect when the white folks talk amongst themselves and/or their company. "Eat at the table tomorrow" means that he dreams he will soon eat at the table everyone else eats at like a normal human being. At that point in time, America didn't care about how the Negroes felt in how they were being treated and "I,Too" means that the neareator will soon be like the other Americans and when someone says something about America's beliefs, he will be able to say "I, Too" believe and have been treated that same way.
3. This poem conflicts with the values of the leaders of the movement by saying that a negro is not supposed to be a white man's brother. For a white man and a black woman tiohave a child is looked down upon toward the white man's perspective. W.E.B. DuBois and Alain Locke objected to this poem because they felt that black people who accomplish something great in life should be rewarded and that the white's shouldn't bring up the mulatto fact everyday as if the child was contaminated.
4. Hughes version of his poetry is talking about blacks and how we nee d to be equal with the whites. He doesnt talk about how we will die and other livingnthins that compare to blacks in a situation. Hughes feels that blacks do not receiveenough credit for what they do for the whites. He believes that we should never give up on tomorrow because tomorrow can be better than the day before if we just take the time to fight and believe in ourselves and dreams.
5. In the poem "Note On Commercial Theater" Hughes main point to get across is that people have taken his material and made it their own and not given his credit for it, but one day someone will make a story about him and his accomplishments. Then that is when the people will see who really wrote the songs, plays and poems. Yes these issues are still relevant today. some of the songs we listen to today come from people who have made it and all we do is change the lyrics and make the beat faster or slower with our own twist.
6. I think that Hughes wants to focus on the wrong doings in America toward blacks because it is morre racism in America than in Africa. He wants people to realize through his poetry that blacks and whites should always have equal opportunities and never be judged in anyway, shape or form.
7. In the poem "Africa" the harlot is being referred to the slaves. McKay uses this word to describe how the people recycle themselves by saying " the world was young in pregnant at night" meaning they kept producing children to continue this population since they were onoy slaves.
8. The images change from hogs to dogs to monsters through the dead to people dying but fighting back. Dogs are associated with African American history because the slaves were basically treated like dogs who were sold to different owners.
9. McKay differs from other Harlem Renaissance writers because he doesnt talk about blacks hoping to be free. He talks about what happens in the present and how it would be in the future if the world continues to be in the condition that it is in.He uses other things to compare humans in a situation and somewhat explains in between the lines the explanation of his reasoning

Their Eyes Were Watching God Quote

"Janie soon began to feel the impact of awe and envy against her sensibilities. The wife of the Mayor was not just another woman as she had supposed. She with authority and so she was part of it in the town mind."(Hurston, p.46)
Janie was the mayor's wife and soon realized that she had some things to work on. There were certain things that she could not say and do that would reflect the life that her and her husband live, which will question Jody's ability as mayor. She has a responsibility with running the store her husband set up and by the way the men were staring at her, she had to change her appearance. She did not feel like herself when Jody became the mayor, because then it was a drastic change in his personality.
